On a working ranch there are many opportunities to use horses
for cattle work. Each Spring bulls are driven to the pastures
they will be covering. In late July and early August they must
be gathered and brought home. Throughout the summer some cattle
are checked on horseback. One of your options may be to go with
us. You can always just bring your horse
and explore the private property at your own leisure. The Flint
Hills Region is rough country and your horse should be shod. There are
many obstacles to overcome including, live water, rocks, steep hills,
trees, cattle, gates, and for some horses the challenge of being in
wide open country. The view is breath taking whether you choose
early spring with the new green grass, or late fall when the seed
heads are shooting.

This photo was snapped one day while we were working. Keep your camera loaded, the photos can be beautiful.

Besides bringing your own horse, there are a variety of things
you can do and see. Photo opportunities are endless. With
very few overhead power lines, roads or other man made items, you will see
sunrises, sunsets, undisturbed grasses and streams, wildlife,
wildflowers, and miles of sky and prairie. You may take hikes
anywhere you would like on our property.

- Pond fishing can be
arranged. When conditions are right the fish do bite.
-
Depending
on the rainfall, you may camp under the blanket of a star speckled
prairie sky, with a running creek and fire ring near by.

With a population of only 3000 people in the entire county,
Chase county has a rich tradition of making our own fun with community
activities. Perennial favorites include the annual PRCA
rodeo. Held the first full weekend of each June, it includes
three rodeo performances, 2 dances and a parade. The wildflower
tour hosted by the extension service, is an educational free event
that attracts people from all over. Two tours (that require
prior registration) illustrate the formation and management practices
used to retain the Flint Hills ecosystem. In addition there is plant and
wildflower identification. It is held in mid June each
year. The Ranch Rodeo is another community favorite. Local
cowboys and cowgirls compete using real life skills used daily in
their work. The Saturday before
July 4 there is a community Fireworks. One of our favorite
memories is the year we rode to the top of our east hill and watched
the fireworks from horseback. Please go to the Chase County link which is listed
below to get details and web sites of community activities.
- The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is our neighbor to the east.
They have a variety of activities and hiking trails.
